Meet the 2019 SHYC Junior Sailing Instructor Team!
Amy Vinciguerra: Co-Head Instructor and Head of Rec Programs. We are excited to welcome Amy back as our Head Instructor for the second summer. She grew up sailing at North Cove Yacht Club in Old Saybrook, CT in Dyers, Optis, and 420s. Prior to joining SHYC she ran the sailing program at North Cove YC for 3 years, where she started a 420 Racing Program her last summer. She is a graduate of UMass Amherst with a major in Physics & Astronomy and she has an Education Masters from Sacred Heart University. She was on the UMass Sailing Team for 4 years, where she served as President and Senior Adviser, and helped grow the team from 5 sailors to now having 40 active sailors! She races now at Frostbite Yacht Club in Essex, crewing on a JY15. During the school year Amy is a teacher at a STEM magnet school in Stonington, CT. She is a Level 3 US Sailing certified coach. Griffin Pilz. Co-Head Instructor, Head of SHYC JR Race Programs, and Head 420 Coach. We are excited to welcome Griffin as our new SHYC 420 Race Coach! Griffin brings to SHYC years of high-level 420 Race Coach experience, including being the current off-season coach for the MudRatz 420 Race Program & Team. Previously he was the head sailing coach and 420 race coach at Niantic Bay Sailing Academy. He is also a high school sailing coach. Griffin is a strong technical coach and utilizes a variety of teaching tools including video cams on the boat/sailor followed by debriefs to help sailors advance their skills to the next level. As a youth sailor, he was a top competitor in the ECSA and New England circuit in Opti and c420s. He will be a Level 3 US Sailing certified coach for summer 2019.
Shea Walker. Head FEVA Coach & Senior Instructor. We are excited to welcome Shea back for a third summer, with a focus on Feva and Opti sailors! Shea joined us from Bellingham Washington where she was the Co-Youth Sailing Director for Bellingham Yacht Club. Shea was a multi-year captain of her high school sailing team where she competed at regattas regionally and nationwide; she also competes for her college team. She is an accomplished youth FJ and 29er racer and team racer. Shea is graduating this Spring from California Polytechnic State University. She is a certified US Sailing Level 1 Instructor and is getting her US Sailing REACH certification for summer 2019. Click to read Shea’s Bio
Ryan Squires: Head Opti Race Coach & Senior Instructor. Ryan is a life-long sailor who grew up sailing and racing all types of boats at the Hoover Sailing Club in Ohio. He has competed in a variety of boats including: Opti, Thistle, Flying Scot, 420, FJ, Laser, Laser Radial, Byte, and more. He was a sailing coach at Hoover Sailing Club for the many summers, teaching a range of sailor levels including beginners, intermediate, Opti Race, 420 Race. Last summer he was a private coach for competitive Opti and 420 travel teams around the mid-west. As a youth he was on the USODA Nationals Team Racing Team for Opti. He also represented his club at multiple Chubb Champs and won many regional competitions and sportsmanship awards. He is currently a sophomore at the Miami University in Ohio. He will be a US Sailing Level 2 certified instructor for summer 2019.
Emily Lyons. Senior Instructor. Emily Lyons joins us from Madison, CT . She grew up sailing and teaching at Southold Yacht Club on Long Island, NY. At Southold she ran the programs for the youngest learn to sail groups, including Squirts and Beginners. She also worked with tween and teen recreational sailors. She was a strong junior sailing and high school sailor, including racing for the Madison Hand Team where she was elected captain her senior year. She is currently a sophomore at Fairfield University, where she races for her college sailing team. She will be a certified US Sailing Level 2 Instructor for summer 2019.
Catherine Guanic. Senior Instructor & Assistant 420 Race Coach. Catherine joins us from Niantic, CT where she grew up sailing at Niantic Bay Yacht Club. As a youth, she raced competitively locally and regionally in Optis, Lightnings, and Club-420s for NBYC. She also taught sailing for several summers at Niantic Bay Yacht Club, including heading up their Sailing Activity Programs for younger sailors. Last summer she was the head sailing instructor for the Fenwick Sailing Program in Old Saybrook. During her high school years, she was a top Field Hockey and Lacrosse star for Glastonbury HS, earning All American and All Region awards, and being named captain of both of her teams. She is currently a sophomore at Holy Cross, playing D1 Lacrosse. She is a certified US Sailing Level 1 Instructor and is getting her US Sailing REACH certification for summer 2019.
