Meet the 2017 SHYC Junior Sailing Instructor Team!
Take a moment to learn more about the fantastic team of 6 instructors we have at SHYC this summer.
Teddy Weeks: Head Instructor. Teddy is back at SHYC for the 5th year in a row! This year he will be the Program Director and Head Instructor. Teddy grew up sailing at Ram Island Yacht Club in Blue Jays, 420s, and Optis. Prior to joining SHYC he ran the sailing program at Watch Hill Yacht Club for 8 years. This will be his 12th summer teaching sailing! During the school year Teddy wears different hats: a Physical Education teacher for the New Haven School system, a high-school tennis coach, and the YMCA swim team coach at the Westbrook-Y. In his free times he likes to surf, fish, camp and go sailing on his 1966 Tartan 27 which he keeps in Mystic. Click to Read Teddy’s Bio
Matt Weber: Head Race Coach. Matt is back for a third summer at SHYC as the head race coach! He is a life- long sailor and grew up sailing and racing all types of boats at Atlanta Yacht Club, including Thisles, Y-flyers, Snipes, 420s, Lasers, and Optis. He was the Captain of the University of Georgia Sailing team. Matt is heading off to Medical School in August. We are excited to have him back again! He is a US Sailing Level 1, 2 & 3 certified instructor; STEM/Reach certified; and CPR/First Aid certified. Click To Read Matt’s Bio
Maura Lonergan: Assistant Race Coach & Senior Instructor. Welcome back to Maura for her second year at SHYC! Maura grew up sailing and racing Optis and Club 420s at Beverly Yacht Club in Marion, MA. The past few summers she traveled the country racing c420s, including the c420 North Americans, c420 Nationals, and the US Youth Sailing Champs. In 2014 she was her club’s Junior Sailor of the year; where she also taught for the past 2 summers. She was captain of her high school sailing team junior and senior year, and sailed on the varsity dinghy team at College of Charleston as a freshman! She is a certified US Sailing Level I and Level II Instructor, and also certified in CPR/First Aid. Maura is an experienced instructor at all levels and loves working with kids. Maggie Lyons: Assistant Race Coach & Senior Instructor. Welcome back to Maggie for her second year at SHYC! Maggie grew up sailing and racing c420s, sunfish, and keelboats. She raced in high school for Daniel Hand in Madison, CT. She spent the past 5 summers teaching sailing at Southold Yacht Club on Long Island. Maggie will be entering her junior year at Fairfield University in the Fall, studying elementary education. She is a certified US Sailing Level I Instructor, and also certified in CPR/First Aid. Shea Walker. Assistant Race Coach & Senior Instructor. Shea joins us from Bellingham Washington where she was the Co-Youth Sailing Director for Bellingham Yacht Club. In previous summers she was the Opti Race Team coach. Shea is a freshman in college and sails for her team at California Polytechnic State University. She is an accomplished youth FJ racer and team racer. She is a certified US Sailing Level I Instructor, certified in CPR/First Aid, and a life guard. Click to read Shae’s Bio
Gillian Winn. Instructor. Gillian is from Manchester-by-the-Sea in Massachusetts. She grew up sailing at Manchester Sailing Association (MSA) and then continued on to race for Pleon Yacht Club. She was a junior instructor at MSA in 2014 and 2015, while racing in the afternoons. In the summer of 2016 she coached Optis for the Royal Swedish Yacht Club camp program in Stockholm Sweden. She has been on Manchester Essex’s varsity sailing team since 7th grade and she attended an International 420 academy camp in New Zealand last spring. Gillian is a graduating senior from Manchester Essex Regional High School and will be heading to college in Boston in the Fall of 2017.
