Meet the 2018 SHYC Junior Sailing Instructor Team!
Amy Vinciguerra: Head Instructor. We are excited to welcome Amy as our new Head Instructor. She grew up sailing at North Cove Yacht Club in Old Saybrook, CT in Dyers, Optis, and 420s. Prior to joining SHYC she ran the sailing program at North Cove YC for 3 years, where she started a 420 Racing Program her last summer. She is a graduate of UMass Amherst with a major in Physics & Astronomy and she has an Education Masters from Sacred Heart University. She was on the UMass Sailing Team for 4 years, where she served as President and Senior Adviser, and helped grow the team from 5 sailors to now having 40 active sailors! She races now at Frostbite Yacht Club in Essex, crewing on a JY15. During the school year Amy is a teacher at a STEM magnet school in Stonington, CT. She is a Level 3 US Sailing certified coach . Shea Walker. Race Coach & Senior Instructor. We are excited to welcome Shea back for a second summer! Shea joined us from Bellingham Washington where she was the Co-Youth Sailing Director for Bellingham Yacht Club. In previous summers she was the Opti Race Team coach. She was a multi-year captain of her high school sailing team where she competed at regattas regionally and nationwide. Shea is a sophomore in college and sails for her team at California Polytechnic State University. She is an accomplished youth FJ and 29er racer and team racer. Johnny Fewell: Race Coach & Senior Instructor. Johnny is a life-long sailor and grew up sailing and racing all types of boats at the Florida Yacht Club (FYC), including Opti, Thistles, Snipes, 420s, Lasers, J/24s, and more. He was a sailing coach at FYC for the past 3 summers, teaching a range of sailor levels including beginner, Opti Green Team, and Opti Race Team. In high school he coached Opti Racers from his club year round at high profile regattas and also took a team to the Optimist Nationals. As a youth he sailed in the Snipe JR Worlds in Italy and also qualified for the Opti Team Trials. He is a sophomore at the University of South Carolina where he is working towards his Bachelor of Science and Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. He is on the USC Sailing Team, where he is the Race Team Captain and A-Division skipper. Last year he helped the team launch a Women’s Race Team. Bryce Merrill: Assistant Race Coach & Instructor. Bryce grew up sailing a variety of boats in NJ for Haven Beach Club, including Sunfish, Hunters, Lightnings, and Lasers. He has coached for 2 summers at clubs in NJ, teaching a range of sailor levels from beginner through race-team. He is an accomplished youth Sunfish Racer from the LBIYRA. He is a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh where he is working towards his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He is on the U-Pittsburgh Sailing Team, where he is the A-Division skipper. He will be a US Sailing Level 2 certified instructor for summer 2018. Click to Read Bryce’s Bio.
Mallory Hood: Assistant Race Coach & Instructor. Mallory joins us from Bellingham, WA where she grew up sailing and racing for Bellingham Yacht Club. She has also coached at BYC, instructing youth sailors in all levels of Opti, FJ, and RS Tera sailing. In previous summers she also worked for a model sailboat builder, assembling boat rigging, parts, and kits. She is a graduating senior from high school and will be attending college in the East in the fall. She is a multi-year captain of her school’s successful sailing team and has competed at regattas regionally and nationwide, including the Team Race Nationals and Keelboat Nationals. She is a National Honors Society student and the head of many school clubs including Environmental, ACT/SAT Help Club, Science, and Fencing. She is an accomplished youth FJ, 29er, and MC Scow racer. Max Klin. Instructor. Max is from Essex CT where he grew up sailing at Pettipaug Yacht Club. He was a junior instructor at Pettipaug for 3 summers before becoming a full instructor for summer 2016. He was also a Launch Operator for Brewer Dauntless Marina. As a youth, he was an active Opti and 420 racer, competing in regattas across New England and beyond. He won the NBYC Junior Olympics in 2014 and also qualified to represent ECSA at the Midget Mid-Atlantics. He is a graduating senior from Valley Regional High School where he is Captain of his Cross Country Running Team, President of his school’s National Honors Society, and VP of 12th grade.
